Marc Fliedner is a lifelong civil rights activist. In his almost forty years as an attorney, he has fought for survivors of violent crimes, including hate crimes, sexual abuse, child abuse, and police misconduct, and always for the rights of queer folks, people of color, and people with disabilities. In this moment, he has come to believe that he is better able to contribute to the elevation of the human condition via the arts than the practice of law. That mission includes documenting American queer history that has long been hidden and is now subject to erasure. As he begins a career writing for the musical theatre, he looks to the work of greats before us who began with the practice of law, including the incomparable Oscar Hammerstein II.
